The Transportation Ministry on Thursday made a last-minute change to toll collection during Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend.
Travel on national freeways will now be fare-free from midnight to 5 a.m. from May 27 to May 30, according to a press release.
The original policy allowed fare-free travel during the same period on May 27 and 30, but only two hours of fare-free travel on May 28 and 29 (from 3 to 5 a.m.).
The policy change comes amid concerns that fatigued drivers taking advantage of the 3 to 5 a.m. stretch would increase the risk of road-related accidents.
The ministry's traffic management policies last year canceled toll-free travel during off-peak hours in the middle of the night, which resulted in traffic bottlenecks during daytime holiday travel.
